At the 2014 Saanich Fair, Toryn and I were there with the Alderley Grange, as we have been for the past three years. On the first day, two different vaulting friends ran up to us and asked if we had seen the bus conversions in the parking field. Given that we never leave the gates for the entire four days of the Fair, we hadn’t, but suitably interested, we closed up the farm stand after hours and headed off to check them out.

Outside the gates, we found four bus conversions sitting in a big U, and after hanging around for a little bit, one of the owners came outside and chatted with us. Dave, who is either going to turn out to be our biggest asset (super helpful!) or biggest nightmare (he found us Bustar, after all) turns out to be one of the friendliest people around!

He spent about 20 minutes answering questions about his conversion, and then offered us a tour. His lovely wife answered questions as well, and they showed us many details and told us several stories that made us even more excited about converting a bus into a home.

After a few minutes, I got a huge shock when my old riding instructor’s sister popped her head up the stairs, followed by my instructor herself! Turns out the sister owns the bus across from Dave (I had NO idea she was a bus person too!) and took us for a tour of her bus. By this point, the other two buses (and their occupants, more to the point), had heard that we were interested in converting, and took us on tours of their buses as well.

We spent nearly two hours with them and got more and more excited about the idea of owning and living in a bus, though we were still thinking of it as a long term plan (possibly to occur after our one to two-year trip around the world in 2016ish) until Dave said,

“Well, if you’re interested, I know a good bus up-Island…It’s a great deal and if my buddy doesn’t take it, I’ll let you know.”
